Here is a link--kindly provided by Scott Sanders himself--to the original version of his essay on "Audubon the Writer." A version of this was published as the introduction to the Audubon Reader (Indiana University Press, 1986), really the first time Audubon was appreciated as a nature writer. I offer my own take on Audubon in a web essay, which also goes into the problems of editing Audubon (a note of caution: this is a transcription of a public talk I gave a few years ago, and it's not flawless). For the not-faint-of-heart, I also offer a Lacanian reading of Audubon by Michael Ziser: you have to scroll to the end to get to him, but there are some comments also on "My Style" and generally about death in Audubon (and Poe and Uexkuell and.....).
Professor Alan Braddock (the art historian I work with) has given me permission to include his slide show on Audubon's "gun vision." And here's a link to the essay on "The Golden Eagle" I mentioned.
